As Syrael said on page 223, they figure that the deactivated tower provides the juice needed for the return trip. This is backed by episode 37 "Temptation", when the data in the tower didn't fall until Jeremie began the return trip, not when Aelita deactivated it.

I also added my theory that Lyoko doesn't change with the return trip, same as WildWolf42. Episode 30 "A Great Day" suggests this when Aelita did not come back to Earth, along with the activated tower and monsters being still around.

Anyway, Eric's question. Speculation time!

Next page on Monday! Have a good weekend!

Eric: Why would someone do that? Why make a time machine and not want to bring a dead person back?
Taylor: That’s a good question. Now you may be wondering why I said no to your ‘use the time machine now,’ Eric.
Eric: Yeah.
Taylor: All of the towers must be either under the control of one entity or all neutral.
Taylor: With even one tower out of sync, the supercomputer can’t get enough computing power to perform big tasks, like return in time.
Taylor: There’s also the fact that everything on Lyoko remains unchanged. If by chance you could use the flood program, XANA’s tower would still be active.
Taylor: Any monsters would still be around, any you killed would NOT be reformed, and Aelita would remain in the same place.
Taylor: Now, so you don’t have to balance out-of-character info with in-character, Jeremie can research the supercomputer during vacation, if you want to do your plan again.
Stein: I would.
Eric: I’ll, I mean, Ulrich will stick around too. Keep an eye on things.
Stein: If you want. The tricky thing is that I’ll have to redo all the progress I made on Aelita’s materialization.
Taylor: The supercomputer doesn’t change so any files or programs you sent to it will still be there.
Stein: At least that’s some good news.

The 'why would someone make a time machine like that?' question? Well three things occur to me
1) "Life is special" so it's just a problem they couldn't get around
2) To take a darker tack, someone wants to be able to kill someone then go back to the past so that there's no evidence of them doing so
3) I've been looking into the continuum rpg lately, and one of the things there is that the continuum doesn't let people cheat death, otherwise no-one would ever die and the world would get crowded, so something along those lines

Oooh! My name was said! Cool! I just thought Lyoko didn't change so the XANA attack would still be going on the same as it was before the Return to the Past, so if there was a super-laser being charged it would stay charged... I kinda like the tower providing the power a little better though... It might be left over from when XANA has it or something.
