When my sister and I were younger, we thought that the return to the past allowed the gang to fix their mistake, which somehow prevented XANA's latest attack. Some of the episodes supported this like Ulrich taking Milly to the dance prevented a distraught Milly from leaving her teddy bear alone, or when the cabinet holding samurai armor was left open. But other episodes like this one and the nuclear plant and the one with trains... yeah, no way the gang could've done anything.

Of course we now know the reason why time travel wouldn't work. But when you guys were kids or first saw the show, what were your thoughts on why they didn't use it?

Come back at 8PM comic time this evening for the next page. I love you all!

Transcript

Eric: Wait, if Jeremie is at the factory, then he can use the time machine, right?
Rachel: My god, that’s right. We can literally prevent this whole mess.
Taylor: It won’t work.
Eric: And why is that?
Taylor: It. . . It just won’t.
Andy: Struggling not to metagame yourself?
Taylor: Mmm-hmm.
Stein: And it would take too long for Jeremie to research the supercomputer.
Stein: Well, since he’s not telepathic, he never heard Ulrich’s question and will continue with his original plan.
Taylor: I’ll take it!
Eric: I hope there’s a good reason for this.
Rachel: Don’t worry your little head about it. I’m sure there is.
Eric: Little?

I just assumed they couldn't do it until they'd completed the mission, like maybe getting control of the tower gives them the juice they need to use it.

I've been watching the first season lately while exercising, and it seems the return to the past happens even when Jeremie is restrained away from the computer, so right now I just think its poor writing :3

I like the idea that it won't change anything on Lyoko, so X.A.N.A still has control of the tower and can do whatever his plan is anyway.

hey? i just assumed it was dependant on the deactivation of the tower. like as long as the tower is active, they can't do it.
But i think it's just because they would go back in a situation where Xana is still active, and whatever they try to fix this way, it would be able to counter it, hence why they have to neutralize the tower first.
